Everyone is familiar with the Hippocrates quote “First do no harm” but there are few doctors who know that he also said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Here’s where you’ll find posts on how food, nutrition, natural medicine and holistic care are changing lives.
When Ruth Reichl took over editing duties of my favorite food magazine, Gourmet (RIP), she started “Politics of the Plate” which was intrepid for a maintream food publication. This is my way of keeping the tradition and where I will post commentary on food issues and policy.
When its baking out there, it is hard to bring myself to bake in here. Cranking up an oven to 375 degrees in a room that’s already 85 degrees and an ambient outside temperature of 90 degrees, just does not sound appealing no matter what promise the other side of the oven door holds.
So here are two of my absolute favorite summer “cookies.” We’ve all eaten refrigerator cakes. These are freezer cookies. Absolutely no oven required. And I swear, I’ve made these two and popped them in the freezer in half an hour. 2 varieties, 40 cookies in 30 minutes? Yep, I’m there.

Ahhhh. Summer. Sun and 95 degrees. One of the things I look forward to during this season is crafting wonderful Herbal Iced Teas. You don’t need to spend $$ and waste all that packaging by buying pre-bottled iced teas. A lot of iced teas also come unnecessarily loaded with sugar that you definitely don’t need. Its very easy to make your own and its fun to experiment with different flavors!
